San Francisco Pathway to Leadership in Urban Schools (PLUS) is a two-year leadership support and clear credential induction program that goes beyond traditional school leadership coursework to train principals under the actual conditions they are likely to face in schools. Beginning with intensive summer training in July 2017, PLUS leaders will learn to master the San Francisco Unified School District's (SFUSD) Strategies for Success, our most effective methods for raising student achievement at all levels:

  • Implementing the SFUSD Core Curriculum, using student data as a living tool to make informed decisions.
  • Providing tiered levels of academic and behavior support to all students.
  • Building a clear vision, culture and conditions for college and career readiness.
  • Recruiting, developing and retaining highly qualified teachers and staff.
  • Engaging SFUSD families in school success.

PLUS Leaders benefit from multiple systems of support, including a cohort invested in their growth, and a PLUS coach devoted to developing their essential leadership competencies. This is the fastest, most effective way to hone the judgment and leadership skills that you will need to lead a thriving SFUSD school.

SFUSD and PLUS use a rigorous, competency-based selection model to identify qualified candidates and get them into leadership roles as quickly as possible.

The application process contains the following four stages:

  1. Complete an initial application: The initial application consists of two sections that help us determine eligibility and readiness for scholl leadership in SFUSD and the PLUS program. The first section consists of a short set of application questions that ask about educational background, resume information, and location preferences.  The second section of the initial application includes essay questions and a performance exercise. In total, the initial application should take 60-90 minutes to complete.

  2. Participate in a phone interview: Based on your initial application, you may be invited to participate in a 30 minute phone interview, which will help us further assess whether our district and program are a good fit for you.   

  3. Join a group interview: Candidates who successfully complete the phone interview will be invited to join a half-day group interview event with other candidates, which includes role plays, group activities, and in-person interviews.

The screening process for San Francisco PLUS is built into SFUSD's administrative selection process. Our selection model is a research-based, holistic model that recognizes that the competencies of an effective school leader are hard to discern in a simple interview process. Our selection process utilizes various techniques that helps us gather significant data and evidence for each candidate.
